Governor DeSantis is touting the importance of early childhood literacy.

While in Fort Pierce on Thursday, he said a child's inability to read early in life has a major negative effect on their quality of life later on.

"Early illiteracy is tied to higher likelihood of dropping out of school and lower lifetime earnings. In fact, 90 percent of all students who fail to earn a high school diploma struggle to read in Grade 3."

DeSantis was at Indian River State College to do a ceremonial signing for House Bill 3, which was officially signed into law last month.

Under the "New Worlds Reading Initiative," children through 5th grade who are reading below their expected level will get free books delivered to their homes every month while school is in session.

The first books will be sent out by the end of this calendar year.
