The Killers Honor George Floyd With 'Land Of The Free' Performance

While many celebrated the birth of America on July 4, The Killers used the opportunity to honor George Floyd — the unarmed Black man who was murdered by Minneapolis police in May. The band was part of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular and played their one-off single "Land of the Free" from their Prairie Sun Recording Studio in Sonoma, California.

Though political in nature, Brandon Flowers tweaked the lyrics in the second verse to condemn police brutality and pay homage to Floyd. "When I go out in my car/ I don't think twice/ But if you're the wrong color skin/ You grow up lookin' over both your shoulders/ In the land of the free," Flowers sang. "And how many killings must one man watch in his home/ Till he sees the price on the tab/ Eight measured minutes and 46 seconds/ Another boy in the bag/ Another stain on the flag."

Watch the special below, and The Killers' performance at the 27:08 mark.

The Killers performed a similar version of the song last month on Instagram, which you can watch here. They're hard at work on a new album, Imploding the Mirage. Though its release has been delayed, the band has given fans a taste of what to expect with the tracks "My Own Soul's Warning," "Fire in Bone," and lead single, "Caution."
