South Florida Pays Tribute To The Victims Of 9/11

Flags are flying at half-staff across South Florida today as the community pays tribute to those who lost their lives eighteen years ago on 9/11. Miami Beach Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez was part of the search-and-rescue team that went to New York two days after the attacks. He says the event has forever changed him personally and professionally. Fernandez is being awarded a plaque in commemoration of his work during 9/11 and the work of all firefighters nation-wide. Miami Beach firefighters are lining up in front of their stations to lower flags to half-staff at 8:46 this morning, marking the first time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center.

The Miami Beach 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is being held at Fire Station 2 at 8:30 this morning, located at 2300 Pine Tree Drive in Miami Beach. Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are hosting a public Ceremony of Remembrance at 9:30a at Tropical Park. The city of Fort Lauderdale is holding a ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum at 10 this morning, located at 1022 West Las Olas Boulevard. Hallandale Beach is hosting a National Day of Service and Remembrance to install Green infrastructure at the LEED Gold Certified Main Fire Station, located at 111 Foster Road in Hallandale Beach at 8:30 this morning.
